About Us

About Us – Rugadir

At Rugadir, we are a young, independent cooperative driven by a simple belief:
beautiful craftsmanship should create real opportunities for the people behind it.

We work directly with women artisans in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, regions where access to stable work is limited and winters are long and harsh.

Our Community

Many of the women we work with:

  • Have never attended school
  • Are widows supporting 2 to 5 children
  • Are elderly artisans aged 60 and above
  • Live with physical limitations or disabilities

Despite these challenges, they carry generations of knowledge in hand-weaving Moroccan rugs, passed down through tradition rather than formal education.

Our Approach

Instead of asking these women to leave their villages, we bring the work to them.

This allows them to:

  • Work from their own homes
  • Stay close to their families
  • Avoid dangerous travel and harsh winter conditions
  • Maintain dignity and independence

In the cold months, when travel is difficult and opportunities disappear, home-based work becomes essential for survival.

Impact Beyond Rugs

By creating consistent income opportunities, our work helps families:

  • Provide food and basic needs
  • Send their children to school
  • Prevent children from being forced into:
    • Shepherding livestock
    • Construction labor
    • Factory work in distant cities

Education means choice—and choice means a future.

Craft With Purpose

Every rug we offer is:

  • Handwoven using traditional techniques
  • Made from natural wool
  • Created slowly, with care and intention

Small variations in color, pattern, and texture are not flaws—they are the signature of human hands and lived experience.

Why Rugadir Exists

Rugadir was created to prove that:

  • Ethical work can be sustainable
  • Tradition can meet modern homes
  • Artisans deserve fair, respectful partnerships

When you choose Rugadir, you are not just purchasing a rug—you are supporting families, preserving heritage, and helping work stay where it belongs: at home.
